Dental caries (tooth decay)

Dental caries is a widespread, chronic, infectious disease that affects the hard tissues of teeth. By the age of 17 years, almost 80% of Americans have had a cavity. While the overall burden and severity of dental caries in children and adolescents has declined in the last 30 years, the disease is still highly prevalent and severe among low-income Americans.
