All children
under the age of six should be screened for signs of early dental
caries on the facial surfaces of the six front teeth, as well as
for signs of cavitation on these teeth. Cavitation is characterized
by loss of tooth structure and discoloration.
For infants and toddlers,
screening may be conducted using a hand-held or headlight. An infant
or toddler can sit facing his or her parent. The parent should tilt
the child towards you and a quick screening can be conducted visually.
The lips are lifted and the teeth are examined for signs of decay.
If the teeth are covered by debris, you can use a small piece of
gauze or cotton to remove the debris and examine the teeth.
Older children can be asked
to smile or open wide. The lip is lifted and the teeth are examined
for signs of early decay or cavitation.
Please refer to the Screening Demonstration
to review the procedures for caries screening. |
