Action Maintenance
People in the action stage are changing their behavior, experiences, or environment in order to overcome the problem. This requires overt behavioral changes and a considerable commitment of time and energy. People in this stage need positive reinforcement and support for continuing their tobacco cessation. Those in the maintenance stage are working to prevent relapse and consolidate the gains achieved during action. For an addiction like tobacco dependence, this stage extends from six months onward past the initial action. People in this stage need positive reinforcement and encouragement to maintain their healthy behavior.

"It's great to hear that you have recently quit smoking. How is it going? Is there anything I can do to help you stay tobacco-free?"

"It is great that you haven't gone back to using tobacco. How are you feeling? Is there anything I can do to help you stay tobacco-free?"

Reinforce all positive aspects of quitting, such as money saved, improved physical ability, and improved taste and smell, and discuss the negative aspects of returning to tobacco use.
