Bupropion SR
is an antidepressant, and is the first non-nicotine medication shown
to be effective for smoking cessation and approved by the FDA for
that use.
Its contraindications
are: patients with a seizure disorder; current or prior diagnosis
of bulimia or anorexia nervosa; use of another medication containing
bupropion; or use of a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor within
the previous 14 days.
It can be used
in combination with nicotine replacement therapies, though it is
available exclusively by prescription.
