Psychiatric disorders are more common among smokers than in the general population. Smokers with psychiatric disorders should be provided with smoking cessation counseling and pharmacotherapy if necessary.

Bupropion is effective in treating depression and should especially be considered for smokers with a current or previous depressive disorder. In addition, smoking cessation interventions do not interfere with recovery from dependency on other drugs.

Quitting smoking may affect the pharmacokinetics of certain psychiatric medications, so you need to monitor the actions or side effects of these drugs in smokers who are attempting to quit.
