Some individuals in this population may require extra assistance when quitting smoking. For those who lack literacy skills or have difficulty with medical language, offer help in interpreting pharmacotherapy instructions and avoid using jargon or abbreviations. Others may be unable to afford medication, whether over-the-counter or by prescription.

For those enrolled in the Voices of Detroit Initiative, assistance in obtaining these medications is available. Please click here for VODI contact information.

For others, consider the relative cost of the available therapies when recommending them. It may help to remind the patient that nicotine replacement and bupropion will not cost much more than buying cigarettes on a daily basis. Once the patient has quit successfully, there will be no further cost for tobacco.
