| Bidis: |
| Bidis
(or "beedies") are more dangerous than traditional tobacco
cigarettes. Bidis are non-filtered, highly toxic flavored cigarettes
that are commonly used among teenagers. They are usually produced
in India or Asia.
Bidis have higher
levels of carbon monoxide, nicotine, and tar than traditional cigarettes,
and are very addictive because of their high levels of nicotine.
Users also inhale a greater number of toxins when smoking bidis
because of their low combustibility.
Health risks of
smoking bidis include coronary heart disease, lung, stomach, esophageal,
liver, laryngeal, pharyngeal, and oral cancers; and perinatal mortality
when bidis are smoked during pregnancy. |
Counseling
users
Counseling bidi smokers is similar to counseling cigarette smokers.
However, users should also be cautioned that bidis are more dangerous
than traditional cigarettes because they are more addictive and contain
more nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide than regular cigarettes. For
more information on counseling, please refer to the "Counseling"
section. |
