Cigars contain toxic and carcinogenic materials as well as nicotine. In fact, one cigar can contain levels of nicotine that are equal to a pack of cigarettes.

Cigars are addictive and pose numerous health hazards. The risk for oral and esophageal cancer is similar in cigarette and cigar smokers. There is an especially high risk for oral cancer when alcohol is used simultaneously with cigars.

Cigar smokers are at risk for having strokes, heart attacks, and lung disease, as well as stained teeth and chronic bad breath.
Counseling users
Counseling cigar smokers is similar to counseling cigarette smokers. However, users should also be cautioned that one cigar can contain levels of nicotine that are equal to a pack of cigarettes. Even when the smoke is not inhaled, toxins from cigars enter the mouth, lips, and tongue, and therefore present a high risk for oral cancers.
